Why Queer?
I’ve had some people ask “why is it that I use the word queer?” so I’ve decided to answer that here (tee hee I rhymed).
I know that some people within the Queer (or LGBT) community still find the word ‘queer’ offensive. For many people, particularly from my generation and also within Canada, Queer has very much been taken back by the community.
I’m very used to the word queer from my university days when I was actively involved in Queer McGill. It was there when I learned why the student organization used the word and it made complete sense to me. They, and I, use it as an easy umbrella term for the LGBT community. Many people in the community do not identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Trans. You have people who identify as Queer, Two-Spirited, Gender-queer, Intersex, Fluid, or don’t identify themselves under a label at all, so LGBT leaves these people out. The term Queer I feel best works as an umbrella term for the community while also serving a reclaimation of the word from the negative connotation that it had taken on previously.
So instead of using something like LGBTsTgTSQIsGqF I use Queer - it’s easier (another rhyme!).
Slainte!
